PETER MUTIE, VICE-PRESIDENT, AFRICA PUBLIC RELATIONS ASSOCIATION

Peter Mutie is a communications specialist with experience spanning over 15 years in publishing, public relations and strategic communication.
His career started in 1991 when he joined Kenya Literature Bureau, the biggest book publishing company in Kenya as a business editor in charge of business publications. In 1996, Peter joined longhorn publishers (formerly Longman) as a humanities editor. In 1998, he shortly worked with Nations Newspapers, the leading Kenyan daily newspaper as a sub-editor before joining Kenya Electricity Generating Company Ltd (KenGen) as Public Relations and Communications Officer. While in KenGen, he was part of the core team that developed the power company’s new image and reputation, positioning the company as the leading electricity generator in East Africa.

In 2003, he joined East African Development Bank (EADB), a premier development bank as Head of Communication. While based at the Head Office in Kampala, Uganda, he took charge of the Bank’s Communications function, Marketing and Brand Management in the entire East Africa region. Besides establishing and heading the Public Relations and Communication function, he also managed the Bank’s communication channels, researching, identifying and addressing various communication requirements and establishing information, education and communication programmes for portfolio development in the Member States of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

In 2005, Peter joined the National AIDS Control Council as the Head of Communication, a position that coordinates all the national HIV and AIDS communication programmes. In that position, he coordinates a host of national and international stakeholders, taking lead in a sizeable number programmes that have translated to impressive strides in HIV prevention quoted locally and internationally.

Peter’s academic credentials include Masters in Business Administration, Bachelor of Arts (Econ), Postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communication (Distinction) from University of Nairobi, Advanced Diploma in Strategic Public Relations from UK’s International School of Management and Public Relations, among other management and communications training programmes.

He has worked in a mix of dynamic sectors, gaining wide and varied experience in strategic management, communication and public affairs. Peter has also been a key speaker in international forums, the latest two being IPRA Summit held in London in June 2008 and Communications Partnership in South Africa in September 2008.

Currently, he is the Chairman of the Public Relations Society of Kenya (PRSK), Vice-President of the Eastern Africa Public Relations Association (EAPRA), Vice-President of Federation of African Public Relations Association (FAPRA), Member of International Public Relations Association (IPRA), Council Member of the Media Council of Kenya as published in the Kenya Gazette Notice No. 11308 of 16 November, 2007 and a Director in the Brand Kenya Board. Peter has won a number of coveted awards, the latest being the Public Relations Society of Kenya (PRSK) Golden honours, which he was awarded in 2006. The award recognizes member(s) who significantly contribute to advancing PRSK objectives. It is the Society’s highest individual and lifetime achievement award presented to a public relations practitioner and PRSK member whose accomplishments have made a major contribution to the profession, has inspired fellow practitioners professionally and personally, has increased the common good and reflected credit on the Society.
