James E. Grunig

James E Grunig ia professor emeritus in the Department of Communication at the University of Maryland. He holds a Ph.D in mass communication from the university of Wisconsin. He has been awarded two honorary doctorates (Honoris Causa), by the Universidad San Martin de Porres of Lima, Peru in 2006, and the University of Bucharest in Romania in 2008. Grunig has conducted research on public relations and strategic management, segmentation of publics, models of public relations, organization of the public relations function, global public relations for scientific organizations, and communication theory.

Grunig has edited, authored, or co-authored five books and 240 other publications such as book chapters, journal articles, report, and papers. His articles have appeared in the Journal of Public Relations Research, Journalism Quarterly, Journalism Monographs, Journalism Studies, Communications Research, Human Communications Research, Public Relations Review, Public Relations Research & Educations, Public Relations research Annual, Journal of Communications Management, Academy of management Journal, Economic Development and Cultural Change, Journal of Communications, Journal of Technical Writing and Communications, and American Behavioral Scientist. He is the coauthor of Excellent Public Relations and Effective Organizations: A Study of Communications Management in Three Countries, Managing Public Relations, Public Relations Techniques, and Manager’s Guide to Excellence in Public Relations and Communications Management. He is Editor of Excellence in Public Relations and Communications Management. Excellent Public Relations and Effective Organizations received the 2002 PRIDE award of the Public Relations Division of the National Communication Association as the best book in Public Relations. He has presented talks and seminars to approximately 400 professional and educational groups in 40 countries. In the summer of 2004, he was the Wee Kim Wee Professor in the School of Communication in Information at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

Grunig was named the first winner of the Pathfinder Award for excellence in academic research on public relations by the institute for Public Relations Research and Educations in 1984. in 1989, he received the Outstanding Educator Award of the Public Relations Society of America. In 1992, the PRSA Foundation awarded him the Jackson, Jackson & Wagner award for outstanding behavioral science research. He own the most prestigious lifetime award of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) in 2000, the Paul J. Deutschmann Award for Excellence in Research. In 2002, he was awarded the James W. Schwartz Award for Distinguished Service to Journalism and Communication, lowa State University. In 2005, he received the highest award of the institute for Public Relations, the Alexander Hamilton Medal for Lifetime Contributions to Professional Public Relations, and the Dr. Hamid Notghi Prize for career Achievement in Public Relations from the Kargozar Public Relations Institute, Tehran Iran. In 2006, he delivered the annual distinguished lecture of the institute for Public Relations. In 2008, the Arthur W. Page Society, awarded him its Distingushed Service Award.

Grunig has worked professionally in Public Relations and as a science writer for the National Science Foundation, International Harvester Company, the U.S Department of Agriculture, the University of Wisconsin, and lowa State University. He also has served as a research consultant to AT&T; the Edison Electric Institute; the Maryland State Department of Education; Black and Decker; the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance; the U.S Department of Energy; Edelman Public Relations Worldwide; and many other organizations.

Grunig is a member of the Arthur Page Society, the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC), the International Public Relations Association, the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC), the International Communication Association (ICA), and the National Communication Association (NCA). He has served as head of the AEJMC public relations division and the ICA public relation interest group. He was coeditor of the Public Relations Research Annual and its successor, the journal of Public Relations Research, from 1989-1994. He also serves as an advisor to Lawrence Erlbaum Publisher for its series of book on public relations.

From 1985-2002, Grunig served as project director for the $ 400,000 research project on excellence in Public Relations and communication management, funded by IABC Research Foundation. In 36 years at the University of Maryland, Grunig advised 75 Master’s theses and 25 doctoral dissertations.
